A Spanish Dominican monk who was appointed grand inquisitor for all Spain in 1487. Under his authority, thousands of Protestants, Jews, suspected witches and others were killed or tortured during the Spanish Inquisition. Torquemada used the Inquisition for the next 11 years to investigate and punish Marranos (insincerely converted Jews) and Moors (a mixture of people, mostly derived from Arabs and Berbers inhabiting northern Africa), apostates and others on an unprecedented scale. Torture was used to gain evidence and a wide range of offenses. About 2000 people were burned at the stake during Torquemada's term of office.
